Crater Lake Winter Camping-2.jpg

Hello there! My name is Sonja and I’m a Photographer and Storyteller based in Seattle.

I originally hail from southern Wisconsin, a place that couldn’t be more different from the mountainous regions and coastal shores I currently head to with every spare moment I can find.

I grew up in a family that prioritized experiences over material possessions and though I may have rebelled against that notion in my teenage years and early 20s, the seed was planted. It just needed the perfect conditions to germinate. Those conditions lined up in late 2014 while I spent an afternoon hiking through a small arboretum in Madison, Wisconsin. The crisp autumn air, the smell of fallen leaves, and the complete solitude I found in a secluded forest in the middle of the city flipped a switch in me. A few weeks later I ventured to a state park and went on my first real hike. In those few miles I fell in love with hiking, the outdoors, and the way the outdoors made me feel: Alive.

In the summer of 2015 I went on a camping trip in Michigan, and that fall I headed out on my first backpacking trip (in Rocky Mountain National Park) and thus fell in love with the national park system. I recall thinking, “there are 58 more parcels of land set aside like this one?”

Since that trip I have continued to hike and backpack in the far-flung reaches of the Cascades, Sierra, Rockies, and Alaska. I have added backcountry ski touring and kayaking to my ever-growing list of outdoor hobbies.

Somewhere on my backpacking journeys, I decided that I wanted to fully capture the places I was visiting and I purchased my first camera. I now capture each of my trips in the backcountry through photography and writing in hopes of sharing these beautiful lands with others and inspiring them to embark on adventures of their own!
